You Were Made on Purpose
“If only I was…”
We all have ways of finishing that sentence. Things we wish we could change about ourselves. This is a natural byproduct of looking to the world to tell us whether we're worthy or not. But what if I told you that God chose you—and only you?
Psalm 139 has been on my mind this week. David's words have been like a refreshing sip of water to me when he says, "You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother's womb" (Psalm 139:13).
If David's words are true about who God is, then God chose you.
Go ahead—look in the mirror.
There were nearly infinite versions of you that could have existed when you were in your mother's womb. Yet David confidently tells us that God knit you together and formed you. Friend, take another look. God decided to make you, you.
It's all too easy to stand in front of the mirror wishing one thing about our face were different, the sound of our voice a little higher or lower, or our skin a little darker or lighter. We all have our lists.
Here's what I want you to think about today: God could have made anybody else, but He decided to make you.
Who are we to tell the Creator that He made a mistake or left something unfinished?
Friend, I don't ask that question to shame you. I ask it to encourage you.
If God formed you, then He fashioned you and put you together just as you are—on purpose.
David's next words become the challenge for us:
"I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well" (Psalm 139:14).
David looks at himself and says, "Thank You."
This isn't coming from a place of pride; it's coming from a place of worship. He recognizes that God fashioned him fearfully—with the utmost care and attention. And what was true of David is also true of you.
So let me leave you with this:
The next time you look in the mirror, practice saying, "Thank You," to the Lord.
Pay attention to what happens in your spirit.
Look at the thing you've always wished you could change and remind yourself that God made you this way on purpose. God doesn't make mistakes, and you're not one either.
You were made intentionally, for such a time as this.
