The New Year’s Rhythm
Rhythms. We live by them. 24-hour cycles, weeks, months, seasons, and years. From the beginning of time, there have been beginnings and endings. It’s how we were made. These rhythms and cycles are in place for a reason.
Entering a new year is a special time. It prompts self-reflection in assessing the year now past and allows for a blank canvas for the one to come. God in His infinite wisdom created time. He spoke it into existence at the beginning, “and there was evening and there was morning, the first day” (Genesis 1:5).
There truly is a grace from the Lord over the rhythms and cycles we live by. Regardless of how hard yesterday may have been, there is – Lord willing – a tomorrow. A season of great progress and growth turns over to one of challenge, but that too will usher forth a new beginning at its end.
Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 talks about a season for everything under the sun. There are seasons to laugh and to cry, to be born and to die, to keep and to throw away. God made the year to hold four seasons. Yes, the joys of summer, but there’s a purpose for winter too. It allows us to feel the ebbs and flows of life.
Friend, how do you find yourself stepping into this new year? Are you filled with hope and joy for what’s to come? Or, maybe you’ve been longing for last year to pass so to start afresh. Have you been walking hand-in-hand with the Lord, or has He felt distant? Take advantage of the new year’s rhythm. Use the blank slate as a motivator to step into all God has in store for you this coming year.
I’m not talking about new year’s resolutions like getting to the gym more or eating healthier. No, I want you to think about the kind of person you’re becoming. And to remind you that you are becoming someone with each passing choice you make. Hold on to the practices that have ushered you into deeper, Godly character and let go of those that have been stripping you of who you’re called to be.
It's God’s desire that you would know Him and walk with Him. The beauty of cycles and the cadence of life is that regardless of how things have been or how they were, we can always begin a new thing and we can continue in the way of righteousness. Would we do so, together, walking with God as we step into this new year of 2026!
